Precaution is one word that should be remembered when working at heights, especially when falls account for 33% of fatalities in the construction industry. Working on elevated areas usually entails ladders so it is invaluable that ladder safety is a priority when observing fall protection in the workplace.
There are two important factors that need particular attention in practicing ladder safety: proper ladder selection and electrical shock precautions.
Ladder Selection
1. Use the right ladder for the task at hand
2. Read thoroughly the Duty Rating of the ladder, including materials, dimension and capacity.
3. Inspect ladder upon receipt and before each use.
4. All working parts must be in perfect condition. Ladders must have non-skid pads and that all mechanisms are working: nuts, bolts, hinges, steps, rung locks, ropes and pulleys.
Electrical Shock Precautions
1. Beware of electrical devices and like components that may carry currents and cause electric shock. Metal ladders are electrical conductors and failure to follow precautions could result in serious injuries or even fatalities.
2. Stay focused on the ladder whenever you are on it and keep your weight at the center.
One misstep could cause a major accident but keeping in mind these ladder safety practices could save many lives.
